The hook

Users do not churn because a feature is missing. They churn because the third step took nine clicks and one guess.

Intent · Instrument and remove friction across activation and habit, and build an experience system the team can extend without a designer in every room.

Take this if

Six signals you are leaking this value

01

Activation drop-off nobody can explain

02

Support tickets repeat the same three confusions

03

Design is a service desk, not a discipline

04

No design system — every screen is bespoke

05

Accessibility is a compliance afterthought

06

AI features bolted on as a chat box

About the course

Human-centred design begins with the struggle, not the screen. We map the user's decision moments, then design the shortest credible path through them.

You will run friction audits, build an experience spine (activation → habit → expansion), and stand up the primitives of a design system.

2026 additions: designing AI-mediated interfaces — trust, correction, undo, provenance and graceful failure — plus accessibility (WCAG 2.2) and multi-modal input as defaults.

Tools you will use

  • Friction audit sheet
  • Usability test protocol
  • Journey instrumentation map
  • Design token starter

Prerequisite

A live product or prototype and access to its analytics.

Curriculum

What we cover, hour by hour

01 · Friction audit

  • Task-based usability testing at speed
  • Funnel and event instrumentation for activation
  • Heuristics review and severity scoring
  • Support and session evidence mining

02 · Experience spine

  • First-run design and time-to-value
  • Habit loop and expansion moments
  • Information architecture and naming
  • Empty, error and edge states as first-class

03 · System and AI surfaces

  • Design tokens, components and contribution rules
  • Designing for AI: trust cues, provenance, correction, undo
  • Accessibility and inclusive defaults (WCAG 2.2)
  • Design QA in the delivery pipeline

Key takeaways

  • A scored friction backlog
  • An activation redesign with measurable target
  • The starting kit of a design system
  • Patterns for trustworthy AI interfaces

You leave with

  • Friction backlog
  • Activation redesign spec
  • Design system primitives
  • Accessibility checklist
